On March 12, 2023, it was announced that the Commonwealth of Dominica and TRON have collaborated on a Digital Identity (DID) initiative that will transform personal identification in the digital economy. The project will be combined with the Dominica Metaverse project, marking TRON's latest partnership with the country.
This announcement comes after the Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, designated TRON as the country's national blockchain in October 2022. Additionally, the newly formed DMC Labs, in partnership with TRON, is developing and launching the Dominica Coin (DMC). Furthermore, seven TRON-based cryptocurrencies were approved as legal tender on the island.
The collaboration between Dominica, Huobi, and TRON aims to develop the first-ever blockchain-based DID, the Dominica Digital Identity (DDID). The project will be utilized as both a government-issued identification for citizens and tourists, and as a unique digital ID in the upcoming Dominica Metaverse.
A blockchain-based DID is a digital identification created, managed, verified, updated, and accessed via blockchain technology. The DDID project seeks to offer an identity verification system that enables citizens and tourists to store their identification information in an easily accessible way and engage in commerce with cryptocurrency securely, which will upgrade and enhance travel and commerce in the Caribbean region.
The DDID is a significant milestone for Dominica as it marks the country's first Web3 initiative since the passage of its Crypto Ordinance in 2022. The hope is that it will serve as a model for identification and international travel, ultimately enabling every person to travel freely and engage in trade anywhere in the world.
