Users of the famous privacy-focused chat app Signal will now donate to the project using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC).

Signal revealed on Monday that it has begun accepting cryptocurrency contributions as a source of funding for the Signal Technology Foundation, the charitable group behind the software. “As a nonprofit organization, we depend on your support. If you've been patiently waiting for Signal to accept cryptocurrency donations, you no longer need to hold[sic] back your generosity” Signal said.

Cryptocurrency donations are now available via Signal's official website's Donate section, which specifies that the latest function is allowed through a big crypto donations portal, The Giving Block.

Signal accepts 12 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ether (ETH),Litecoin (LTC), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH), the stablecoin Gemini Dollar (GUSD), Simple Attention Token (BAT), Zcash (ZEC), and Chainlink (LINK). “The Giving Block also supports anonymous donations,” Signal said in a memo accompanying its cryptocurrency donation line.

Signal is an end-to-end encrypted cross-platform messaging app. The Signal Technology Foundation was established in February 2018 by WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton, who left WhatsApp and Facebook in 2017 to found Signal.

Signal CEO Moxie Marlinspike also acts as a consultant on the MobileCoin project, according to Platformer newsletter founder Casey Newton, who claimed in January 2021 that Signal was exploring payment functionality with Binance-backed Stellar-based privacy coin platform MobileCoin.
